O HISTORII TRADICE SV. MIKULÁŠE
Svatý Mikuláš byl biskupem v Myře v Lýkii (historický region v Anatolii v Turecku). Žil ve druhé polovině 3. a první polovině 4. století a proslul svou šetědrostí k potřebným a jako ochránce nespravedlivě obviněných. Je patronem dětí, námořníků, obchodníků, studentů, vězňů, právníků a lékárníků. V západní liturgické tradici spadá jeho svátek na 6. prosince, ale v Česku, Slovensku, Nizozemsku a Belgii se v den před tímto svátkem drží tradice nadílky. Zatímco v Česku a na Slovensku obchází biskup Mikuláš s čerty a anděly domácnosti s dětmi, kdy tato skupinka naděluje hodným, ale i trestá a straší zlobivé, v Nizozemsku navštěvuje Mikuláš, neboli Sinterklaas, doprovázen Zwarte Pietem, neboli Černým Petrem, veřejná místa - školy, nemocnice a nákupní centra a stejně jako u nás rozdává sladkosti (a Petr straší). Tento nizozemský Sinterklaas je předobrazem a inspirací Santa Clause, který rozdává vánoční dárky dětem v USA a dalších zemích.

ABOUT THE HISTORY OF THE ST. NICHOLAS
Saint Nicholas was a bishop of Myra in Lycia (a historical region in Anatolia, Turkey). He lived in the second half of the 3rd and first half of the 4th centuries and was famous for his generosity to the needy and as a protector of the unjustly accused. He is the patron saint of children, sailors, merchants, students, prisoners, lawyers and pharmacists. In the Western liturgical tradition, his feast day falls on December 6, but in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, the Netherlands and Belgium, the tradition of giving presents is observed on the day before this feast day. While in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, Bishop Nicholas with his angels and devils visits households with children, where this group rewards the good and punishes and scares the naughty, in the Netherlands, Nicholas, or Sinterklaas, accompanied by Zwarte Piet, or Black Peter, visits public places - schools, hospitals and shopping malls - and, just like in our country, distributes sweets (and Peter scares). This Dutch Sinterklaas is the prototype and inspiration of Santa Claus, who distributes Christmas gifts to children in the USA and other countries.
