In honour of the WW1 soldiers named on the Keyworth Memorial on Nottingham Road - the 3 new housing estates Keyworth Rise, Nicker Hill and Spinners Croft all take their street names from the soldiers who gave thier lives in World War One. These caches are placed in honour of their memories - they are all local to Keyworth in some way. Many of these families were long established in the small community of Keyworth (787 total population made up of 372 males and 415 female - as in 1911 census summary books).
Harry Murden - Harry was born in 1896 the son of Frederick William Murden and his second wife, Annie Murden (nee Barnes). Frederick William Murden was born in Keyworth in 1859. Frederick remarried in 1895 to Ann Barnes who was born in 1876 at Kinoulton.
In the census of Keyworth 1901 (aged 4) & 1911 (aged 14) Harry lived at Plumtree Road (Now Nottingham Road).
His family are still living there in 1921 census (his father and sisters), and again on the 1939 register his father is at 87 Nottingham Road with his sister Constance and her husband and niece. His mother Ann died at the age of 33 in 1909. His siblings were Amy, Freda, Winnie, Constance and Margaret. His Fathers parents were John & Mary Murden (of Keyworth). His Mothers parents were William & Fanny Barnes (of Kinoulton). His father Frederick died in 1941 aged 82.
Harry Murden - Private 17542 11th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment. He volunteered for service immediately on declaration of war. Killed in action 1st July 1916, aged 20, during the first day of the Battle of the Somme. In 1911 he was an errand boy in a lace merchant's office. He later worked for a Chemist. He was awarded the 1915 Star, The Victory Medal and the British War Medal.
Murdon Crescent (mispelt) is named in his honour at the housing estate at Keyworth Rise off Bunny Lane.
