I`ll agree that this is a strange location for a cache with a landfill and shooting range nearby, but its a beautiful trail with boardwalks, bridges and seating in case you want to rest a bit.
Tucked between the Perdido Landfill, the Escambia County Sheriffs firing range, and Interstate 10, this remarkable 150 acre site is a conservation easement. The nature trail is a loop, seven-tenths of a mile long, that winds through two distinct ecological communities: longleaf pine/turkey oak hills and titi/tupelo bottom lands. The trail meanders along an oxbow of the Perdido River with a wooden bridge crossing one section of the water.
Some highlights of the trail include white top pitcher plants, cricket tree frogs, pileated woodpeckers, beaver cuttings, crawfish castles, huge southern red cedars
and black titis,(pronounced" tie-tie`s) Florida anise trees, and old pines once used for turpentine. Be sure to take a trail guide, a plant list, and a bird list from the box to use as you walk the trail.
The signage, boardwalks, and bridges on the Perdido River Walk were coordinated and funded by the League of Women Voters of the Pensacola Bay Area. Donations for the up-keep of the trail are gratefully accepted.
LOCATION: Go west on highway 90 toward Alabama/
Florida state line. Be looking for Beulah road (county road 99) and head north over Interstate 10 and just past the Perdido Landfill. On the north side of the Landfill property, (N30`34.780` W 087`23.802`) be looking for the road that leads to the Escambia Sheriffs firing range and go west on this road. At the firing range, take the left fork
in the road and proceed to the grassy parking area. There you will see the trail head and information station.
Because of the dense forest, my GPS had trouble settling out. I`m sure yours will too and thats why this cache is NOT going to be hard to find. Pay attention to the clue and it will put you right on it. Please make sure you cover it with pinestraw before you go. At this point you will be about 1/3rd of the way around the trail loop.
ORIGINAL CACHE: Ammo container includes Log Book and pen, a spray bottle of "OFF" insect spray (just in case) a first aid kit (just in case) a emergency whistle with built in compass(just in case) a suncatcher, a pack of color crayons, lots of sea shells from Pensacola Beach renourishment project, a pack of colored pencils, a whoopie cushion, a easter bunny keychain, a container of Miracle Bubbles, a pink Cadillac keychain from Graceland. Some jumbo dice, Five packs of chewing gum, and last,,,it seems a geocache in Northwest Florida would not be complete without a "Hobo" geocache button. We`ve spotted those buttons in almost every cache we`ve found.
Good hunting!
