Volt egyszer egy Kölcsey-művközpont...
Debrecenben a kultúra, a kikapcsolódás, a tanulás és a tartalmas együttlétnek is igazi, megfizethető otthona volt ez a nagyszerű intézmény. A Kölcsey Ferenc Megyei és Városi Művelődési Központot és Ifjúsági Házat 2003 július végén kezdték bontani, s a helyére épített Kölcsey Központ (az új létesítményegyüttes egyik eleme) 2006. február 24-én nyílt meg.
Csupán 25 évig állhatott, de a sorsát nem az pecsételte meg, hogy életveszélyessé vált volna az épülete.
A Mikolás Tibor (1924–2014) által tervezett Kölcsey Ferenc Megyei és Városi Művelődési Központ és Ifjúsági Ház szürke „erődítményének” építése 1978-ban fejeződött be, és november 5-én adták át. Az intézmény első igazgatója dr. Gyarmati Kálmán volt.
A Kölcseyben zajlott munka és pezsgő élet mindenképpen felejthetetlenné és kimagaslóvá tette.
Nyílt titok ugyanakkor, hogy a tervező a Kölcseyre látott a lakásából, így 2003-ban azt is végignézhette, ahogyan lerombolják a művét.
Akkoriban bármikor be lehetett menni, nem voltak teljesen zárt körű rendezvények, és ha csak lepihenni akartunk, akkor is szabad volt az út.
A parkoló fölötti, jellegzetes híd végén bent jobbról volt a porta, ahonnan a táncterembe vagy a szemközti hallba is lejuthatott a látogató. Félúton, bal oldalon nyílt a kamaramozi (a Művész), ami később a Vojtina Bábszínházzal is osztozott a helyiségen. (A bábosok az ezredforduló óta a volt Uránia Mozgó palotájában játszanak.)
Lent pedig hírlapolvasó is volt, ahol díjtalanul lehetett tájékozódni a világ dolgairól.
A központi csarnokban kővázas bőrkanapék szolgálták a kényelmet. A Kölcsey tele volt különféle rendezvény- és próbatermekkel is, és ennek köszönhetően a csillagászoktól a népi táncosokon át a rockzenekarokig otthonra lelhettek a közösségek – úgy, hogy tároló- és fellépőhelyet is nyertek ezáltal.
A komplexum egyik fő szentélye a színházterem volt, ahol a teátrumi műsorok mellett koncertek és talk show-k is mentek. Anno a fiatal Friderikusz Sándor itt lett igazán híres, és mellette megannyi szuper dzsesszfesztiváli és folklór buli is volt ott! Karácsonykor az épület és a parkoló adott otthont az Aranycsengő vásárnak.
A Kölcsey rendelkezett étteremmel, szabad ég alatti mini amfiteátrummal, valamint a Perényi utca felől kis pódiummal és szökőkutas medencével is. Nyaranta a Lenin-szobor előtti parkolóban állították föl a hatalmas sátrat, amiben a virágkarneváli sörfesztivál zajlott. A Kölcsey adott helyett a Debreceni Jazz Napok sok programjának is.
Meg persze turkálós programok is voltak, amelyek miatt sok kritika érte a Kölcseyt – eltakarítani a föld színéről mégsem emiatt kellett. A 2003-as bontás megkezdése előtt még volt egy tervpályázat azért, hogy szállodai és konferenciarésszel egészítsék ki, és szabják át némiképp az eredeti tömböt.
Ezen a pályázaton Mikolás Tibor is részt vett (később meg is mutatta nekem a művét), de a város vezetői végül úgy döntöttek, hogy teljesen új művházat, illetve konferencia-központot építtetnek. A 2003 július végén elkezdett ledózerolást sokan fényképezték, azonban dr. Nagy Attila egy sokkoló képeslapot is megjelentetett róla.
Az új létesítmény 2006-ban nyílt meg, s ehhez kapcsolódott aztán a hotel és a végül kortárs művészeti múzeumként „hasznosított” másik szárny. Az általuk közrefogott területet is leműkövezték, és azóta ez a – zajos gördeszkások, BMX-esek által koptatott – tér viseli Baltazár Dezső püspök nevét.

There was once a Kölcsey-művközpont....
In Debrecen, this great institution was a real, affordable home for culture, recreation, learning and meaningful socialising. The demolition of the Kölcsey Ferenc Megyei és Városi Művelődési Központot és Ifjúsági Házat began at the end of July 2003, and the Kölcsey Központ (one of the new facilities) was opened on 24 February 2006.
It was only allowed to stand for 25 years, but its fate was not sealed by the fact that its building had become unsafe.
Designed by Tibor Mikolás (1924-2014), the grey 'fortress' of the Kölcsey Ferenc Megyei és Városi Művelődési Központ és Ifjúsági Ház was completed in 1978 and inaugurated on 5 November. The first director of the institution was Dr. Kálmán Gyarmati.
The work and bustling life in Kölcsey certainly made it unforgettable and outstanding.
It is an open secret, however, that the designer had a view of Kölcsey from his apartment, so that in 2003 he could watch his work being demolished.The hiding place is located in a wooded area at the base of a tree, covered with undergrowth.
In those days you could go in at any time, there were no completely closed events, and if you just wanted to relax, the road was open.
At the end of the distinctive bridge over the car park, there was a doorway inside on the right, from which visitors could go down to the dance hall or the hall opposite. Halfway down the hall, on the left, was the chamber theatre (the Művész), which later shared the space with the Vojtina Bábszínház.
There was also a newspaper reader downstairs, where you could read up on world affairs free of charge.
In the central hall, leather sofas with stone frames provided comfort. The Kölcsey was also full of event and rehearsal space, providing a home for communities from astronomers to folk dancers to rock bands - and a place to store and perform.
The theatre was one of the main sanctuaries of the complex, hosting concerts and talk shows alongside the theatre shows. It was here that the young Sándor Friderikusz really made his name, and it was also the scene of many a super jazz festival and folklore party! At Christmas the building and the parking lot hosted the Aranycsengő Fair.
The Kölcsey had a restaurant, an open-air mini amphitheatre, and a small podium and fountain pool on Perényi Street. In the summer, a huge tent was set up in the car park in front of the Lenin statue, where the Flower Carnival beer festival took place. The Kölcsey was also the venue for many of the Debreceni Jazz Napok programmes.
And of course, there were also a number of market stalls, for which the Kölcsey was much criticised - but that was not the reason why it had to be cleared from the face of the earth. Before the demolition started in 2003, there was a design competition to add a hotel and conference area and to adapt the original block somewhat.
Tibor Mikolás also took part in this competition (he showed me his work later), but the city leaders finally decided to build a completely new art gallery and conference centre. The demolition, which started at the end of July 2003, was photographed by many people, but Dr. Attila Nagy also published a shocking postcard.
The new facility opened in 2006, and was followed by the hotel and the other wing, which was eventually 'used' as a contemporary art museum. The area between the two was also landscaped, and since then this space - scoured by noisy skateboarders and BMX riders - has borne the name of Bishop Dezső Baltazár.
