House Post
This artwork commemorates a unique 12,000 year old archaeological site that was discovered during the 2008 restoration of Bear Creek.
The values and history of a people, village, house, or family have been traditionally displayed by Pacific Northwest Salish peoples using house posts. It is with this in mind, and in honoring this long-held practice, that the artists present the contemporary interpretation of a traditional house post, noting, demarking, and honoring the people and village that held this current location for thousands of years and hundreds of generations. Inherent in this representation and carved of a single cedar log, this pole honors the ancestors and people on high. This aligns with the method to memorialize and the traditional burial rights reserved for Northwest Salish Tribal peoples most honored and highborn.
"Through recognition of the sustainability and the natural cycles the salmon represents an understanding of how to successfully exist, survive and sustain . . . through all. Through a combination of this imagery and the utilization of the house post, we honor the village site and the people it represents. We remember them and place them on high. We raise our collective hands and raise them up." - The Muckleshoot Indian Tribe
