La tradizionale pittura a calce delle case ha ragioni sia pratiche che estetiche. la vernice bianca protegge dal calore, poiché riflette i raggi del sole, il che contribuisce a mantenere le case più fresche nei mesi estivi. La leggenda narra che la città sia stata colpita più volte da epidemie di peste in passato. Per prevenire la diffusione della malattia, tutte le case sono state dipinte con calce, che ha un effetto antisettico. Così il colore bianco divenne il simbolo della città.

Um die Ausbreitung der Krankheit zu verhindern, wurden alle Häuser mit Kalk gestrichen, der eine antiseptische Wirkung hat. So wurde die weiße Farbe zum Symbol der Stadt.
