ADAMS LEANING WHEEL GRADER # 8
In 1885, J.D. Adams developed the leaning-wheel grader.
The leaning wheel, combined with an angled blade, increased the grader's ability to excavate and move material in a specific direction.
Almost a century later, Adams' principle lives on in modern road graders.
This grader was used in the Carlsbad area to build and maintain the roads. It was a two man operation and was pulled by either a four horse or mule team, or in later days, a tractor. After service with the City of Carlsbad and Eddy County, it went to a large farm south of Black River. There it was shared by the community and used for many years until replaced by more modern equipment.
Donated to The City of Carlsbad by Robert and Katherine Nymeyer.
