The Wizarding World Geocache Series
"Upon the signature of the International Statute of Secrecy in 1689, wizards went into hiding for good. It was natural, perhaps, that they formed their own small communities within a community."
— The secrecy surrounding the wizarding world
The Wizarding World, also referred to as the magical community, is the society in which wizards and witches live and interact, separate from non-wizarding society. The two communities are kept separate through the use of charms, spells, and secrecy. Wizards and witches are forbidden to reveal anything about magic to Muggle society due to the International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy, but that does not mean that the two worlds live entirely apart.
"Dementors are among the foulest creatures that walk this earth. They infest the darkest, filthiest places, they glory in decay and despair, they drain peace, hope, and happiness out of the air around them... Get too near a Dementor and every good feeling, every happy memory will be sucked out of you. If it can, the Dementor will feed on you long enough to reduce you to something like itself... soulless and evil. You will be left with nothing but the worst experiences of your life, and you will just be an empty shell that lost its soul."
— Remus Lupin's description of Dementors
Dementors are among the foulest to inhabit the wizarding world. The amortal, wraith-like dark creatures act as soulless guards of Azkaban prison. They feed on human happiness, emitting intense cold, despair, and depression, and force victims to relive their worst memories. Their ultimate attack, the "Dementor's Kiss," sucks out a human soul, leaving the victim in a permanent vegetative state.
They stand about 10 feet tall and wear long, tattered black cloaks, normally gliding just above the ground. They have no eyes; where a mouth should be, there is a gaping hole used to suck the soul out of its victims. Their hands are described as grayish, slimy-looking, and covered in scabs, resembling something that has decayed in water.
Dementors feed on joy, peace, and hope, and their presence drains all happiness from the surrounding air. Their presence causes a dark, oppressive atmosphere where the surrounding air has an unnatural chill, fires go out and water freezes.
While dementors cannot see, they can "sense" people through their emotions. In attacking, a Dementor's victim is forced to re-experience their worst traumas. The creatures most terrifying power, however, is known as "The Dementor's Kiss." A Dementor clamps its jaws over a victim’s mouth and consumes their soul. This leaves the person an empty shell—alive, but without thought or memory. In the books, this is considered a fate worse than death.
While they are invisible to Muggles, Dementors can still sense and be attacked by them.
The only effective counter-measure to repel Dementors is the Patronus Charm (Expecto Patronum), which creates a positive energy shield to drive them away. Eating chocolate is the standard medical treatment after an encounter as it helps restore warmth and combat the lingering depression.
Dementors have no true loyalty. They serve whoever provides them with the most "prey."
