Cheap Trick is the self-titled debut studio album that came out in 1977.
After honing their skills and sound in bars and clubs for four years, Cheap Trick was signed by Epic records. The album was produced by Jack Douglas who produced other artists like Miles Davis, Alice Cooper, Montrose and John Lennon.
The album was received well by critics but not so well by the public topping the US Billboard 200 chart at 207. Critics compared Robin Zander’s vocals to John Lennon’s and the band itself to the Beatles. The original vinyl record had a “Side A” and a “Side 1” because the band claimed they didn’t have any “B material”.
“Oh Candy” was the debut single from the album. It is based on the true story of the band’s first photographer and friend who committed suicide. The song failed to make the charts.
Other songs of note on the album are “Elo Kiddies” and “Mandocello”. “Elo Kiddies has become a standard opening number at their concerts. “Mandocello” Is one of my favorite songs from the band. It is a soulful song, and the lyrics speak of a long-distance love.
