“Music is the soundtrack of our lives,” Dick Clark once quipped. There is no doubt that we all have songs and albums that we remember as being significant for any number of reasons over the course of our lives. Whether it be pop, rock, blues, country, jazz, classical and, yes, even rap, these tunes evoke fond memories and stay with us forever.
I have created a list of what I consider to be my favourite albums over my lifetime. It is influenced by the era I grew up in and would likely be considered primarily a “classic rock” list. I certainly would not expect anyone to agree wholeheartedly with my list, but chances are that one or two of these entries might make your list as well.
Sigh No More is the first studio album from British folk rock group Mumford and Sons. Released in 2009 it is the “newest” album on my top ten list. Their liberal use of banjos and mandolins gave Sigh No More a unique sound that was missing from the popular music scene at the time. “The Cave” and “Little Lion Man” were minor hits from the album and my favourite song is “Dust Bowl Dance”, a haunting tune about family loss during the Great Depression. The album was a bit of a slow burner reaching number two on the UK Albums Chart sixteen months after its release. Unfortunately, Mumford and Sons dispensed with the banjos and mandolins after their second album, Babel, and ended up sounding much like every popular band of the time. But I would still travel some distance to see them given the chance.
