Town history:
Wheeler derived its name from James Wheeler, the first Supervisor. Albert P. Foland of St. Louis opened a general store for common goods. When the railroad came through in 1872 he moved his store near the station. He was also considered the founding father in 1869. On May 28, 1869 a post office was established with Daniel D. Brooks as the first postmaster. In 1913 there were three mail routes. Wheeler School was built of wood in 1884. The schools was also graded that same year. The school was a two story building until 1910 when a new school was built. The new school was made of brick and was only one story. It house ten grades and was taught nine months out of the year. The Bank of Wheeler was established 1906. The main customers are farmers. No money was loaned to any corporations, stockholders, director or officer of the bank. The Methodist Church was organized at the Tubbs school house. Jonathan Finch was the organizer of the church. . The church building was built in 1885.
