Paddling the Lower Welland River
The Welland River in Ontario, Canada, flows west to east into the Niagara River. Originally called Chippawa Creek, it was renamed by John Graves Simcoe in 1792. The river has a low gradient, making it similar to a long pond.
Historically, it was an important transportation route, with vessels moved by manpower or steam tugs. The river's mouth was altered in the 1920s, diverting its natural flow. Today, government agencies and Ontario Power Generation work to mitigate water fluctuations.
This section of the Welland River Runs from Port Robertson to Chippawa, where it enters the Niagara River and soon after drops over Niagara Falls. No Worries, you will not be paddling over the Falls.
Launch: George Bukator Park: N 43 02.744 W 79 06.480
Chippawa Boat Launch: N 43 03.128 W 79 03.608
I have also heard it’s possible to launch at Grass Brook Road and Moyer Road near: N 43 02.128 W 79 11.100
Launch areas in Port Robinson (both grassy & slight hill), one by old bridge at N 43° 02.136′ W 79° 12.624′ & other by aqueduct at N 43° 01.744′ W 79° 12.663′

Closer to the Niagara River, the water flows swiftly, so if you wish to save energy, you will want to paddle East To West
West of the QEW, the flow slows significantly, so paddling either way through that section is likely fine.
About the Caches:
Most geocaches in this series are pill bottle sized containers, but not all. All caches were placed by a canoe, so if you are a kayaker, be prepared to stand up in your craft, or bring a canoe partner with you. In the Port Robinson section (NFJK caches), most caches you can sit in your watercraft, are rated a Terrain of 4.5. A terrain of 5.0, means you may have to leave your craft or stand up. (no tree climbs in this section)
Happy Geo-Paddling!
