Babaco is a unique fruit native to the highlands of Ecuador. Scientifically known as Vasconcellea × heilbornii, it is a hybrid between different species of the Vasconcellea genus. The fruit is pentagon-shaped, seedless, and has a mildly tangy flavor, often compared to a mix of pineapple, papaya, and kiwi.
Babaco is highly nutritious, rich in vitamin C, and packed with antioxidants that support immune health and digestion. It thrives in cool subtropical climates and is commonly grown in greenhouses. Unlike papayas, babaco plants produce only female flowers and can yield up to 60 fruits annually.
