Geocache Description:

This multi is a replacement for two previous multis that have had to be archived.  Expect to take about an hour's walk through the park. The route can be done by bike.

Please park at the Parking Area provided which is the entrance to Bledisloe Park. Do not park on the Campus or Ring Road on weekdays as the Massey University parking wardens are quick to ticket any unofficial cars and fines are hefty!  Parking should be OK within the campus at weekends.

The published coordinates take you to a sign in the car park for Bledisloe Park.

Collect the information at the sign to find the coordinates for Waypoint 1 which can be found at:

 S 40 23.ABC  E 175 37.DEF

A  = 0

B  = In the green panel on the left hand side of the sign, how many activities are listed? Count both allowed activities and those not permitted.

= In the legend how many circles?

D  = Distance: Bledisloe Park to Old West Rd ?. 2 km one way.

E  = Distance: Bledisloe Park and Massey Arboretum 2. ? km return loop.

F  = Sixth digit of PNCC phone number

Check sum = 29

The walk to WP 1 takes you into the depths of Bledisloe Park.

Look for a tag attached at a fence corner. On a post with a faded orange tape tied to it.

Here you will find the coordinates for WP 2.

At WP 2 look for a tag with the final coordinates.

The tag is hanging at head height on the trunk of a Monkey Puzzle tree on top of the stop bank.

A short walk will take you to the final container.

Look for a hanging bison tube.

Bring your own pen and enjoy the park!

A SHORT HISTORY OF VERSIONS 1 AND 2 OF THE "BLEDISLOE PARK" CACHES:

Version 2 has had to be archived as the information sign used to gather information has gone.

The original (Version 1) was placed in Bledisloe Park in January 2013 by Possum and Cleo, one of the earlier caches placed in Palmerston North.  Changes in vegetation and the cutting down of a significant tree meant that the original multi had to be archived. This replacement is in memory of “Possum”, a keen geocacher and tramping friend. The replacement has been designed to replicate the original as much as possible and has been generously supported by “Cleo”.

The original description written by Possum and Cleo follows:

“This two stage cache is in Bledisloe Park which has been described an "oasis of calm" on the Palmerston North City Council's web site.

Park in the car park off Tennent Drive just before the main entrance to Massey University (note the car park is closed at night so don't get trapped but it is open all weekend). When you enter Bledisloe Park watch out for native birds as you follow the track path through a native bush remnant along the Turitea Stream. Don't rush to the way point but explore the arboretum where there are rare and exotic trees growing. It is worth visiting the park in autumn when the trees are showing brilliant autumn colours. The arboretum is part of the old McHardy homestead. In 1926 the Palmerston North Borough Council bought the land and donated 12 hectares to Massey Agricultural College as it was then known. The remaining land became Bledisloe Park but former Massey chief groundsman, Dave Bull, took an interest in the arboretum and is responsible for planting many of the trees.”
