The Tate House is a historic house located in the Stroudwater neighboorhood of Portland, Maine. It was originally build in 1755 for George Tate, a former Royal Navy captain whom was contracted to oversee the felling and procurement of King Pine trees to be used as shipmasts. The Tate family continued to live in the home through the Revolutionary War but lost it to bankruptcy in 1803.
The house is a 2.5 story wood frame structure with a two stage gambrel roof with clerestory windows. This style was common in northern New England during the Colonial Period however this is one of two surviving examples in Maine. The house features a central chimney and high quality Georgian paneling, which is believed to have been carved and imported from England during the house's construction. A 2014 archaeological dig found significant wares from the 1750s to the 1780s incuding salt glazed stoneware, creamware and porcelain believed to be from 1750s, 1760s and 1780s respectively.
The House was declared a National Historic Place in the 20th century and was opened as a historic house and museum in 1935. The house and the accompanying museum across the street offer a look into Colonial life in Maine and are open for tours during the Summer and Fall.
