You’re near Empire Lock of the Enlarged Erie Canal, the second version of the canal that carried goods and people across NYS. We all know the Lumber, Coal, and Hay, but other agricultural and industrial goods shipped on barges, leading the state to grow in commerce as well as political power in the nation, eventually earning the nickname, “The Empire State.”
That industry in Fort Hunter included Broom manufacturing. By the 1890’s that industry was confronted with labor strikes that impacted the production in the region. The final large strike was in 1906 as the unionized labor called for fair practices and wages.
