Airport-area caches are popular with those with some spare time before a flight, so I thought I'd look to place a few more.
As with Avonhead Road, Wairakei Road used to cross Russley Road. It was easier to cross on Wairakei Road as there was a roundabout here. The roundabout had a cache on it (Russley's Cap) from February 2014 to October 2015. The roundabout was removed the following year as part of the 4-laning of Russley Rd. There is access to Russley Road from Wairakei on the city side, but not on the airport side. The rest of Wairakei Road is still in tact, with the airport end offering good views across to the international terminal.
The cache is a pill bottle under stones at the base of the post at the end of the tall fence. Watch out for barbed wire on top of the lower fence (especially if you are tempted to squeeze through the gap)!!!
