Quercus ilicifolia, also known as bear oak or scrub oak, is a small, deciduous tree or shrub native to eastern North America. It can grow up to 25 feet tall, but in New England it's usually 12–20 feet. It's known for its holly-like leaves with spiny edges, smooth gray bark that darkens with age, and reddish-purple fall foliage. Bear oak is monoecious, meaning both male and female flowers grow on the same plant.
