Welcome to my first ever Geocaching Series: Latrobe City Olympics!
This series is designed to give cachers a tour of different sporting venues around the Latrobe City council. Some are quite grand, while others may not even be in use anymore, but still make for interesting viewing nonetheless.
The entire round-trip can be completed in a couple of hours at a rush, but it is encouraged to enjoy and savour the experience, as well as get involved! There are plenty of opportunites as you travel to spectate, evaluate, and even partake in several of the activities presented.
Every one of these caches is linked, in the sense that each one has a clue, which, when solved will be used to calculate the final co-ordinates of the Closing Ceremony cache, which containes the grand prize, so make sure you find the clue and jot it down!
This cache is the 7th in the series: Golf.
You will arrive at the Toongabbie Golf Club. This is an 18-hole golf course with a very simple layout. Very flat, minimal trees or water hazards, but still a challenge nonetheless.
Golf as an Olympic sport has not seen much activity. It was introduced at the 1900 Paris games, and was also featured in 1904 (St. Louis), before lack of player entrants forced the Olympic committee to withdraw the sport. Golf would not re-surface in the Olympics again until 2016 (Rio de Janeiro), where it has been featured ever since.
The inaugural gold medallists were Charles Sands and Margaret Abbott, for the men's and women's tournaments, respectively. Both players represented the United States, who still hold a staggering lead for the most gold medals won in the sport with 6. No other country has won more than 1 gold medal in the Olympics. Australia, regrettably, have never won any medals in golf in the Olympics.
The cache is a nano container. Please BYO writing stick, and make sure you replace the cache exactly as you found it.
P.S. Please take care when searching for this cache during magpie swooping season - they can be quite vicious around here!
