The Wild Pugs

Miles and Zero weren’t ordinary pugs.
They were explorers — round, determined, and extremely off-leash.

One misty morning, they slipped through a hole in the fence and trotted into the wilderness.

Their paws crunched across dry leaves. Then Miles stopped.
“That’s odd,” he said. “No lorakeets in that tree. Not even one.”
“Strange, I saw three yesterday.”

They moved on.

By the creek, they counted nine ducks drifting in a sleepy circle.
Past the reeds, they darted between three mossy stumps, then zero barrel rolled while they zigzagged through multiple sgraggely pine trees.
The winding trail curled like a hook, rising just enough to make Miles huff.
“This whole path looks like a backwards three,” he wheezed, tail still curled.

At a clearing, they paused where five flat stones were arranged like stepping stones.
They both stepped through them gently.
Then came a sound: a kookaburra’s laugh — once, then again.
The third never came.

Zero made the call, its almost time for dinner!
As night approached, they turned back toward home.
Their paws were muddy, their faces smudged with adventure.
Stars blinked awake above.
They would return—tired, dirty, and happier than ever.
