Mt. Diablo Is a majestic and beautiful mountain that has one of the best viewsheds in the United States. You can see parts of 35 out of the 58 Counties that make up California. That being said, Mt. Diablo is also viewable from all those Counties. When travelling thru the state, I always try to find Diablo. Finding spots with good Views of Mt. Diablo would make for a great series of Geocaches!
Brushy Peak is a predominant peak in par with Mt. Diablo. In many of our favorite Views of Mt. Diablo, Brushy Peak can be clearly seen because both peaks "jut out" into the Central Valley. Whether you are in the Livermore Valley, Eastern Contra Costa County or the Central Valley, Brushy Peak can easily be spotted.
Brushy Peak played a central role in local Native American Spirituality. Some believed Brushy Peak was created by Coyote, whose footprint became the peak. Brushy Peak and the nearby Altamont Pass are at a geographical trisection where the "territories" of Bay Miwoks, Delta Yokuts and Ohlone. Tribes from throughout the area would meet near Brushy Peak to trade items and have Sweat Lodges. The actual top of Brushy Peak is considered sacred to the decedents of these First Peoples and is off limits except for an occasional guided hike.
