Geocache Description:


Minnesota Smith, the famed archeologist, has long been intrigued by stories of Viking expeditions.

It is said that there was a period of climate change around the time that Lief Erikson came to Vineland. As a result, it might have been possible for a Norse expedition find a northwest passage and cross into the Pacific. If they did, it might also be true that they sailed down the coast until they reached Cental America. On their journey, the Vikings undoubtedly stopped briefly near Point Reyes. From there it would have been easy to hike into the San Geronimo Valley, where hills offered a perfect place to get the lay of the land.

Smith has spent long hours studying The Saga of Björn Breiðvíkingakappi. It tells how a merchant, Gudluef, was blown off course and landed in the Yucatan, only to come across people who spoke their language and had blond hair. Smith believes that the people Gudluef met were remnants of the Great Viking Expedition and the saga offers important clues that link the expedition to Marin.

This letterbox hybrid was placed to honor those who visited here long before Drake.

The parking coordinates take you to the San Geronimo Commons, which in itself is a beautiful place to hike. Some of the trails are lined with poison oak. Make sure that children or people not used to the area know how to identify the plant. It need not be a factor in your search for this letterbox but you do now want to run through it on your way here.
