Er was eens een oud, roestig kanon dat eeuwenlang op het eiland Elba had gestaan. Ooit was het onderdeel van de kustverdediging toen Napoleon daar zijn ballingschap uitzat. Het stond aan zee gericht op de ingang van de natuurlijke haven.
Toen Elba moderniseerde, raakte het kanon in vergetelheid. Niemand wist meer of het ooit echt afgevuurd was. Tot op een dag een Friese wereldreiziger door de Toscaanse Archipel trok en het ontdekte, half verzonken in zand, bij een scheef gewaaide pijnboom. Hij was op een welverdiende vakantie, maar viel als een blok voor de ruige schoonheid van het oude oorlogstuig.
Terug in Nederland vertelde hij zijn Friese vrouw enthousiast over zijn vondst. Ze woonde in een leuk vrijstaand huisje langs een kanaal bij Deinum "Als dat Kanon hierheen komt, zal vanaf die dag het huis Elba heten," en zo geschiedde.
Het kanon werd per schip naar zijn nieuwe locatie gebracht, en werd met een kraan in de tuin geplaatst. Het stond nu op het Friese gras, met uitzicht over de weilanden en het van Harinxmakanaal. De woning kreeg de naam Elba.

Once upon a time, there was an old, rusty cannon that stood for centuries on the island of Elba. It had been part of the coastal defenses when Napoleon was in exile there. It stood facing the sea, pointed at the entrance to the natural harbor.
When Elba was modernized, the cannon fell into oblivion. No one knew whether it had ever actually been fired. Until one day, a Frisian world traveler traveling through the Toscaanse archipel discovered it, half-submerged in the sand, near a crooked pine tree. He was on a well-deserved vacation, but was instantly captivated by the rugged beauty of the old war machine.
Back in the Netherlands, he enthusiastically told his Frisian wife about his discovery. She lived in a charming detached house along a canal near Deinum. "If that cannon comes here, from that day on the house will be called Elba," and so it was.
The cannon was transported by ship to its new location and installed in the garden with a crane. It now stood on the Frisian grassland, overlooking the meadows and the Van Harinxma Kanaal. The house was named Elba.
