La diga del Retorto venne progettata nei primi anni del ‘900 per alimentare il canale del Retorto, testimoniato già nel XV secolo, al quale si stava sottraendo acqua per via della costruzione della centrale idroelettrica Pietro Rusca di Cassano d’Adda comune Milanese. Nel 1927, quando venne inaugurata la centrale idroelettrica – costruita per alimentare l’attiguo sito produttivo del Linificio Canapificio Nazionale – si poneva il problema di ridare acqua al corso principale dell’Adda per alimentare il Retorto. Venne scavato un fosso che alimentava il canale stesso: questo fosso, uscente dalla centrale, giungeva in prossimità dell’alveo originario dell’Adda sulla sponda destra bergamasca, mentre l’attacco del canale Retorto è sulla sponda sinistra quella milanese. Per permettere dunque all’acqua di poter defluire e incanalarsi nel Retorto, si rese necessario uno sbarramento, ottenuto mediante la costruzione della diga. Ancora oggi il canale del Retorto irriga, insieme alle rogge trevigliesi, la cosiddetta Isola cremasca, un lembo di terra compreso tra i fiumi Adda e Serio. All’ingresso della diga è posta una statua del Sacro Cuore di Gesù.

The Retorto Dam was designed in the early 1900s to ensure the continued water supply for the Retorto Canal, which dates back to the 15th century. At the time, water was being diverted from the Adda River due to the construction of the Pietro Rusca hydroelectric power plant in Cassano d’Adda, a municipality in the province of Milan. By 1927, with the inauguration of this hydroelectric plant—built to power the adjacent Linificio Canapificio Nazionale manufacturing site—it became essential to restore water flow to the main course of the Adda River to adequately feed the Retorto Canal.
To achieve this, a new channel was excavated to supply water to the canal. This ditch, emerging from the power plant, reached the original bed of the Adda River on the right (Bergamo) bank. However, the Retorto Canal's intake is located on the left (Milan) bank. To facilitate the diversion of water into the Retorto Canal, a dam was necessary, leading to the construction of the Retorto Dam.
To this day, the Retorto Canal continues to irrigate the Isola Cremasca, a strip of land nestled between the Adda and Serio rivers, along with the irrigation ditches of the Treviglio area. At the entrance to the dam stands a statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
