Mug Tree History
In the summer of 2013, a mysterious mug appeared hanging from a nail on an Osage Orange tree just outside of Kansas, Illinois, leaving locals puzzled about who put it there and why. Over the next few months, more mugs began to appear, slowly transforming the tree into a quirky roadside attraction as word spread through curious travelers and the small-town grapevine. Today, over 25 mugs of various shapes, colors, and sizes dangle from nails and strings, clinking softly in the breeze, each one adding to the tree’s growing legend. It continues to draw visitors eager to see, and perhaps contribute to, the ever-growing collection.
