The trail off Katie Kerr Drive in Avondale Estates and South Decatur is part of the East Decatur Greenway, a thoughtfully developed path spearheaded by the PATH Foundation—a nonprofit known for building off-road trails throughout metro Atlanta. Construction on this segment began in the late 2010s and was designed as a wide, shared-use path to support both pedestrians and cyclists. The trail begins near Columbia Drive and travels north along Katie Kerr Drive, eventually connecting to College Avenue and the broader Atlanta–Stone Mountain PATH network.
Originally an area marked by underutilized land, including a former gas station site, the greenway has since become a key piece of community infrastructure. In addition to providing access to the Avondale MARTA station, it serves as a safe and scenic alternative for residents and commuters. The trail's development also spurred environmental improvements, such as the planting of 91 shade trees in partnership with Trees Atlanta in 2023, enhancing the trail’s beauty and long-term ecological value.
Over the years, community feedback helped shape the direction of the project—such as the 2017 decision to halt plans for a pedestrian gate due to concerns about access and safety. The trail also runs adjacent to Legacy Park, a major affordable housing initiative located on the former United Methodist Children’s Home property. This alignment further amplifies the trail’s role in connecting housing, transit, and green space in a meaningful way. Today, the Katie Kerr segment of the East Decatur Greenway stands as a model of how thoughtful planning can revitalize urban corridors while preserving access, nature, and community character.
