Here in Presteigne, a "Sleeping Dragon" sculpture serves as a poignant memorial to the Welsh soldiers who died in World War I. This unique memorial, created by Peter Smith & a team of volunteers, was initially installed to coincide with the war's centenary & was intended to be temporary. However, due to popular demand & a successful crowdfunding effort, the dragon has returned to the Corton roundabout (also known as Dragon Roundabout) & is now a permanent fixture here in town.
The dragon, crafted from bronze & stone, was designed to evoke a sense of loss & remembrance, departing from the traditional, fierce depiction of the Welsh dragon. It represents not only the lives lost but also the cultural impact of the war, including the loss of Welsh storytelling, singing, & shepherding.
We have hidden a smallish magnetic cache here for you to find (The cache is not on or under the dragon) just large enough for a few small swaps or a trackable. Please bring your own pen or pencil.
If you are doing this as a cache & dash, there is parking in the nearby layby, just off the roundabout. There are also numerous local walks / public footpaths nearby too.
