Welcome to a popular stretch of Offa's Dyke.
King Offa is thought to have built this symbolic border earthwork between Mercia & his enemies during the 8th Century. As a powerful king & statesman, Offa's influence was felt across Britain & Northern Europe. Did he build this defence to control trade or mark the edge of his kingdom? There are many theories! The Dyke still stands as a lasting monument to his wealth & power.
It is also worth noting that from this point there is an excellent view of the monument to Sir Richard Green Price who died in August 1887, aged 83. He is remembered for bringing railways to this region of Wales & is commemorated by a Grade-II-listed red granite obelisk.
At this point the Dyke crosses the road & there is parking here for about 5 cars in the layby. It is a popular starting point for a local circular walk but this cache can also be done as a quick dash.
