* Cavendish was founded in 1790 by three families: the Simpsons, Clarks, and MacNeils, who emigrated from Scotland.

* The community was likely named for Field Marshal Lord Frederick Charles Cavendish by William Winter, an ex-British Army officer.

* For much of its early history, Cavendish was a rural farming community, with farms spread along the red clay roads.

* The landscape was characterized by a patchwork of farms and a blend of communities.

 * The Green Gables Heritage Place, including the house and surrounding landscape, is a major tourist attraction.

*The establishment of Prince Edward Island National Park in the 1930s brought tourism to Cavendish.

*Tourism, particularly related to Anne of Green Gables, is now the primary economic activity in the area.

*Cavendish is part of the Resort Municipality of Stanley Bridge, Hope River, Bayview, Cavendish, and North Rustico.
