Oggi è facile passargli accanto senza notarlo, ma un secolo fa rappresentava l’avanguardia. È qui che nacque una delle prime centrali elettriche cittadine, cuore pulsante della Società Elettrica Bergamasca. Prima dell’arrivo della corrente, Bergamo si spegneva con il sole. Le strade erano illuminate a gas, le fabbriche avevano orari condizionati dalla luce naturale, e nelle case si leggevano libri accanto a lampade a petrolio.
Con l’elettrificazione, tutto cambiò. Non solo la vita domestica e urbana, ma anche la produzione industriale. Questa sede divenne un centro nevralgico per la modernizzazione del territorio. Gli ingegneri che vi lavoravano erano pionieri: studiavano, testavano, e affrontavano guasti con metodi ancora sperimentali. Raccontano che una volta, per risolvere un blackout improvviso in un quartiere intero, un tecnico giovane e inesperto suggerì una manovra “azzardata” che nessuno aveva mai tentato. Funzionò. Quel gesto venne poi codificato nei protocolli ufficiali.
L’edificio ha mantenuto parte della sua struttura originaria, con dettagli architettonici che raccontano l’epoca in cui l’elettricità era ancora una meraviglia. On Via Nullo, right in the center of Bergamo, stands a sturdy, somewhat plain building that seems to watch the passage of time with quiet dignity. Today, it's easy to walk past without a second thought, but a century ago, it represented the forefront of progress. It was here that one of the city's first power plants was established, the very core of the Società Elettrica Bergamasca – the Bergamo Electric Company. Before electricity arrived, Bergamo would grow dark as the sun set. The streets were lit by gaslight, factories operated on schedules determined by daylight hours, and in homes, books were read by the flickering light of oil lamps.
With electrification, everything underwent a profound transformation. This wasn't just about changes in domestic and urban life; it fundamentally reshaped industrial production. This very location became a crucial nerve center for the modernization of the entire region.
