Historien om pappersbruket börjar 1914. Då köpte Aktiebolaget Kartongpappfabriken cirka 5 hektar mark vid den innersta delen av viken. År 1915 började fabriken byggas.
I augusti 1916 kördes pappersmaskinen igång och dygnskapaciteten var då cirka 20 ton.
Redan efter tre år gick dock bruket i konkurs då konjunkturerna efter första världskriget var mycket dåliga.
År 1923 startade produktionen i bruket igen. Detta efter en rekonstruktion med hjälp av Smålands Enskilda Bank. Under det oroliga strejkåret 1930 hade fabriken cirka 80 anställda. År 1937 köptes bruket av den dåvarande disponenten Esbjörn Ulfsäter.
År 1948 startades PM II. Detta var en krigsskadad pappersmaskin som köpts in från Köpenhamn och sedan reparerats. Sedan PM II kommit igång ordentligt, fördubblades kapaciteten för fabriken.
På 60-talet uppgick produktionen till cirka 30 000 ton papper per år. Antalet anställda var då cirka 200. Produktionen utgjordes av papper och papp. Den huvudsakliga råvaran var returpapper. Bland gamla Västerviksbor kallades bruket för "kartongen".
Förpackningsföretaget PLM köpte fabriken 1974. De ägde den fram till 1985. Produktionen lades dock ned redan 1980. I slutet på 80-talet byggdes de gamla lokalerna om till industrihotell.
De omfattande föroreningarna i Örserumsviken från pappersbruket har krävt stora saneringsinsatser (mer om projektet här). Pappersbruket hör med sina tidvis uppemot 200 anställda till Västerviks större fabriker. Delar av fabriken utgörs dessutom av en utpräglad funkisarkitektur, väl värd att slå vakt om.

The Industrial History of the Paper Mill
The history of the paper mill begins in 1914, when Aktiebolaget Kartongpappfabriken purchased approximately 5 hectares of land at the innermost part of the bay. In 1915, construction of the factory commenced.
In August 1916, the paper machine was started, with a daily capacity of approximately 20 tons. However, after just three years, the mill went bankrupt due to the economic downturn following World War I.
Production resumed in 1923 after a reconstruction supported by Smålands Enskilda Bank. During the turbulent strike year of 1930, the factory employed about 80 people. In 1937, the mill was purchased by the then-manager Esbjörn Ulfsäter.
In 1948, PM II was commissioned. This was a war-damaged paper machine that had been acquired from Copenhagen and subsequently repaired. Once PM II was fully operational, the factory's capacity doubled.
In the 1960s, production reached approximately 30,000 tons of paper per year. At that time, around 200 people were employed. The production consisted of paper and cardboard, with recycled paper serving as the primary raw material. Among older residents of Västervik, the mill was colloquially referred to as "the cardboard factory."
The packaging company PLM acquired the factory in 1974 and owned it until 1985. However, production was discontinued as early as 1980. At the end of the 1980s, the old premises were converted into an industrial park.
The extensive pollution in Örserumsviken caused by the paper mill has required major remediation efforts. With at times up to 200 employees, the paper mill was one of Västervik’s larger factories. Parts of the factory also feature distinct functionalist architecture, which is well worth preserving.

Området är tillgängligt för allmänheten dygnet runt. Här finns, förutom olika industrier och en avfallsorteringsanläggning, även en butik med sjöfartsutrustning, några MC-klubbar och föreningar samt möjlighet att sjösätta små båtar och kajaker vid själva viken.

The area is accessible to the public around the clock. In addition to various industries and a waste sorting facility, there is also a shop selling maritime equipment, a few motorcycle clubs and associations, as well as the possibility to launch small boats and kayaks in the bay itself.
