Geocache Description:

[IT]

This is the story of one of the pearls of Tuscany.
The Abbey of San Galgano (source) was a Cistercian monastery founded in the valley of the Merse River between the towns of Chiusdino and Monticiano in the province of Siena, Tuscany, Italy. The roofless walls of the Gothic 13th-century abbey church still survive today.
Near the abbey is the Eremo or Rotonda di Montesiepi chapel, built at 1185.
Construction of the abbey began around 1220 and was completed about six decades later. Less than a century later, at 1363 John Hawkwood and his men plundered the monastery.
The abbey remained impoverished for almost four centuries and continued to fall into disrepair. In (ABCD) the abbey tower collapsed, taking the church's roof with it.
The Rotunda Chapel was restored in 1924 and has retained its characteristic medieval form, similar to the earlier mausoleums of Ancient Rome.

[LV]
Netālu no abatijas atrodas Eremo jeb Rotonda di Montesiepi kapela, celta 1185.
