Let’s gather at Chesterfield Gorge to celebrate a special day. What’s so special about September 21? Here’s a few noteworthy happenings on this date:
1 - INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE. September 21 is the International Day of Peace, urging humanity to set aside its differences and commit to making peace. Established by the United Nations in 2001, the observance is designed to bring the world together. Let’s hope this year will bring some much-needed peace to the world.
2 - The band Earth, Wind & Fire’s "SEPTEMBER," was released on this day in 1978. As the song goes, the date September 21 is reserved “for your hearts to ring, souls to sing, and for dancing in the night.” Just like us geocachers, right?
3 - AUTUMN EQUINOX Equinoxes and solstices are four key points in the Earth's orbit around the Sun that mark the beginning of each season. Equinoxes in March and September are when day and night are roughly equal in length, while Solstices, in June and December, mark the longest and shortest days of the year. These time points occur around the 21st of those months.
4 - WORLD ALZHEIMER’S DAY This takes place every Sept. 21 to raise awareness around the world and challenge the stigma around Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. Worldwide, more than 55 million people are living with Alzheimer's or another dementia. Ongoing research has made very promising results in recent years.
5 - NATIONAL PECAN COOKIE DAY Who could ignore a day to celebrate cookies?
***And last but not least, it’s my 70th birthday! Come join me to celebrate another trip around the sun with some of my favorite people – geocachers! I’ll provide a birthday cake. There are picnic tables and one questionable outhouse but no other facilities. Dogs are allowed but must be on a leash.
