The Garrison is filled with war history. The Horseshoe Barracks at Shoebury Garrison were specifically designed to house soldiers and provide other essential facilities. Built in a horseshoe shape around a parade ground, they included barrack blocks, cookhouses, a Sergeants' Mess, and a Garrison School. The design reflected a shift towards better living conditions for military personnel in the mid-1800s, following the Crimean War.
