Gdynia – miasto spełnionych marzeń
Gdynia to miasto, które wyrosło z marzeń. Marzeń ludzi, którzy wierzyli, że odrodzona Polska powinna mieć własny, prawdziwy port – swoje „okno na świat”. To miasto zaślubione z morzem.
Tempo jego rozwoju nadało Gdyni wyrazisty charakter. Mieszkańcy byli – i są – dynamiczni, przedsiębiorczy, spragnieni przygód. Szukali tu swojej szansy, nowego miejsca na ziemi i lepszego życia. Port budowało państwo, ale miasto – sami ludzie.
Wśród wielu niezwykłych postaci Gdyni szczególne miejsce zajmuje kapitan Zdzisław Pieńkawa. Jachtowy kapitan żeglugi wielkiej, żeglarz regatowy, instruktor, konstruktor statków… a przy tym człowiek o niesamowitej pasji.
Dowodził jachtem Otago w pierwszych historycznych regatach dookoła świata Whitbread Round The World Race 1973/1974. Mimo złamanego masztu doprowadził załogę wokół Przylądka Horn, a jego jacht – najstarszy w stawce – ukończył trasę. Za ten wyczyn otrzymał prestiżowe wyróżnienia Rejs Roku i Srebrny Sekstant.
Był także grotmistrzem Bractwa Kaphornowców, wychowawcą wielu pokoleń żeglarzy, w tym młodzieży na „Pogorii”. Wspomnienie wspólnej pracy z nim na pokładzie tego żaglowca jest dla mnie osobistą inspiracją.

Gdynia – the city of fulfilled dreams
Gdynia is a city built from dreams. The dreams of people who believed that the reborn Poland should have its own true seaport – its very own “window to the world.” A city married to the sea.
Its fast growth gave it a unique character. The people here have always been dynamic, entrepreneurial, and ready for adventure. The port was built by the State, but the city – by its own people.
Among many remarkable citizens stands Captain Zdzisław Pieńkawa – yachtmaster, racing sailor, instructor, and ship designer.
He skippered the yacht Otago in the first-ever Whitbread Round The World Race 1973/1974. Despite a broken mast, he led his crew around Cape Horn, completing the course with the oldest yacht in the fleet. This feat earned him Poland’s top sailing awards – Voyage of the Year and the Silver Sextant.
He was the Great Master of the Cape Horners’ Brotherhood and a mentor to generations of sailors, especially aboard the Pogoria. My own time sailing with him on that tall ship remains a personal inspiration.
