Geocache Description:

Along the Murray Valley Highway there are many examples of erosion and soil profiles. While there are some better examples in the area, the land is either private or parking is poor. For this reason I have chosen this particular spot due to the available parking.

Phone reception is patchy along this road though so it is advised to download the cache info for offline before hand!

What is a soil profile?

A soil profile is a vertical selection of soil comprised of several layers called horizons.

Importantly, soil profiles hold the key to understanding the processes that occurred in soil formation and determining soil characteristics.

(O) Organic Horizon - Surface litter, partially decomposed organic matter

(A) Topsoil Horizon - Humus, Living creatures, inorganic minerals

(E) Eluviated Horizon – Zone of leaching, materials move downward

(B) Subsoil Horizon – Iron, Aluminium humic compounds are accumulated and clay leached down from A and E horizons

(C) Parent Horizon – Weathered parent material: Partial breakdown of inorganic materials

(R) Bedrock Horizon – This horizon is composed of unweathered rock and it is  not technically part of the soil, Rather, all of the soil layers lie on top of compacted bedrock.

All questions for this earthcache can be answered from a visual inspection of the soil profile, you do not need to cross the road or disturb any soil.

Logging Requirements:

In order to log this Earthcache please answer the following:

1. How many horizons can you identify in this soil profile, and which ones are they?

2. What is the predominant colour you see? What causes this colour in soil?

3. Take a photo of yourself or your caching name at the location and post it with your log. Please don't get the soil profile in the background of your photo though to avoid spoiling it for others smiley

You are welcome to log straight away, however please send your answers within 14 days of logging otherwise log will be deleted.

This Earthcache was created to celebrate 25 years of Geocaching!
