EC: Tvrdoća vode – Lednički izvor (Durmitor)

Uvod

U planinskom masivu Durmitor u Crnoj Gori, uvrštenom na listu svjetske baštine UNESCO, nalazi se mnoštvo kraških izvora sa kristalno čistom vodom. Jedan od najpoznatijih je Lednički izvor, koji izbija na približno 1450 m n. v. Poznat je ne samo po hladnoj, osvježavajućoj vodi, već i kao idealna lokacija za ispitivanje tvrdoće vode u visokoplaninskom kraškom okruženju.

Geološka pozadina

Durmitor je izgrađen pretežno od krečnjaka i dolomita mezozojske starosti (uglavnom trijas i jura), nataloženih u nekadašnjem moru. Ove stijene su lako rastvorljive u blago kiseloj vodi i oblikuju tipičan kraški reljef – pećine, ponikve, ponore i izvore (vyvire). Voda koja cirkuliše kroz krečnjak obogaćuje se rastvorenim mineralima, prvenstveno kalcijum-karbonatom (CaCO₃) i magnezijum-karbonatom (MgCO₃), koji u najvećoj mjeri određuju tvrdoću.

Rastvaranje krečnjaka (hemijska reakcija):
CaCO₃ + CO₂ + H₂O → Ca⊃2;⁺ + 2HCO₃⁻

Dulje zadržavanje vode u kontaktu sa stijenom, viša temperatura i veći sadržaj CO₂ iz zemljišta dovode do većeg rastvaranja minerala, pa samim tim i do veće tvrdoće vode.

Tvrdoća vode — detaljnije

Tvrdoća vode predstavlja ukupnu koncentraciju dvovalentnih kationa kalcijuma (Ca⊃2;⁺) i magnezijuma (Mg⊃2;⁺) u vodi.

  • Privremena (karbonatna) tvrdoća – uzrokovana hidrogenkarbonatima Ca i Mg; može se smanjiti prokuvavanjem (izdvajanje kamenca).
  • Trajna (nekarbonatna) tvrdoća – potiče od drugih soli Ca i Mg (sulfati, hloridi) i ne uklanja se kuvanjem.

U predjelima građenim od krečnjaka voda je obično tvrđa, dok je u granitnim ili pješčarskim terenima meka.

  • °dH (njemački stepen) – 1 °dH = 10 mg CaO/l = 17,848 mg CaCO₃/l
  • mmol/l – 1 mmol/l = 100,09 mg CaCO₃/l
  • mg/l kao CaCO₃ – direktan maseni sadržaj CaCO₃

  • 0–4 °dH – vrlo meka voda
  • 4–8 °dH – meka voda
  • 8–12 °dH – srednje tvrda voda
  • 12–18 °dH – tvrda voda
  • >18 °dH – vrlo tvrda voda

Lednički izvor

Lednički izvor izbija ispod masiva Međed i napaja lokalni potok. Temperatura vode tokom godine ostaje stabilna (oko 4–6 °C). Zbog dominacije čistog krečnjaka u slivu, voda iz izvora najčešće pokazuje srednje do visoke vrijednosti tvrdoće. Okolina izvora prikazuje tipične elemente kraškog reljefa – oštre krečnjačke ivice, male ponikve i obližnje ponore.

  1. Opišite boju i bistrinu vode. Da li primjećujete naslage ili kalcitne prevlake?
  2. Izmjerite protok vode u litrima u sekundi (l/s).
  3. Obavezna fotografija: dodajte fotografiju sebe ili vašeg GPS uređaja pored izvora, tako da se vidi okolina (bez otkrivanja rješenja zadataka).

EC: Water Hardness – Lednički Spring (Durmitor)

Introduction

In Montenegro’s Durmitor massif, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, numerous karst springs emerge with crystal-clear water. One of the most notable is the Lednički Spring, issuing at approximately 1,450 m a.s.l. It is known not only for its cold, refreshing water but also as an ideal place to examine water hardness in a high-mountain karst environment.

Geological background

Durmitor is built mostly of limestones and dolomites of Mesozoic age (mainly Triassic and Jurassic), deposited in an ancient marine setting. These rocks dissolve readily in slightly acidic water and form a typical karst landscape—caves, sinkholes, swallow holes, and springs. As water percolates through limestone, it becomes enriched in dissolved minerals, chiefly calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) and magnesium carbonate (MgCO₃), which largely control hardness.

Limestone dissolution (chemical reaction):
CaCO₃ + CO₂ + H₂O → Ca⊃2;⁺ + 2HCO₃⁻

Longer residence time in contact with rock, higher temperature, and greater soil-derived CO₂ promote increased mineral dissolution and thus higher water hardness.

Water hardness — more detail

Water hardness denotes the combined concentration of divalent calcium (Ca⊃2;⁺) and magnesium (Mg⊃2;⁺) ions in water.

  • Temporary (carbonate) hardness — caused by Ca and Mg hydrogencarbonates; it can be reduced by boiling (scale precipitates).
  • Permanent (non-carbonate) hardness — due to other Ca and Mg salts (sulfates, chlorides) and is not removed by boiling.

Waters draining limestone terrains are commonly harder, whereas granitic or sandstone terrains typically yield soft waters.

  • °dH (German degree) — 1 °dH = 10 mg CaO/l = 17.848 mg CaCO₃/l
  • mmol/l — 1 mmol/l = 100.09 mg CaCO₃/l

Lednički Spring

The spring issues from beneath the Međed massif and feeds a local stream. Water temperature remains stable year-round (about 4–6 °C). Owing to the dominance of clean limestone in the catchment, water typically shows moderate to high hardness. The surroundings display characteristic karst features—sharp limestone edges, small dolines, and nearby swallow holes.

Logging tasks

  1. Describe the water’s colour and clarity. Do you observe any deposits or calcite coatings?
  2. Measure the discharge in litres per second (l/s).
  3. Mandatory photo: add a photo of yourself or your GPS device at the spring so the surroundings are visible (without revealing answers).
