Applewood's Wise Tree
Hidden within the forest of Applewood Trail is a silent wise tree that patiently waits for new visitors to gain some of its silent knowledge. Not the biggest tree nor the smallest it lives quite well surrounded with other trees in a path rarely anyone takes while traversing this trail.
Applewood, located in the city of Mississauga is a suburban district "neighbourhood" consisting a group of smaller neighbourhoods, many bearing its name. The area was originally settled in the 1800s having notable villages such as Dixie and Burnhamthorpe. Named after the abundant amount of apple trees in the area, many of the original pioneering families that settled in the area became owners of apple orchards. Eventually with the orchards declining economically, the area became stagnated being mostly rural until suburban development rapidly began during the 1950s economic boom post-World War 2.
Applewood Trail a 7km long trail follows the path of the Applewood Hills Greenbelt/Applewood Valley, it has the Little Etobicoke Creek which is a tributary of the 61km long Etobicoke Creek flowing throughout majority of the trail. This trail has many parks and playgrounds, an example being the Applewood Hills Park near this cache which had a playground installed during the summer of 2003 located near the mid point of the trail. This part of the trail will be located in the Applewood Hills neighbourhood. This greenbelt reminds us of the days when Mississauga still consisted of heavy forests, pastures, farms and was a strong fruit-growing region. The city of Mississauga have been making efforts to re-naturalize this area to sustain a healthy ecosystem.
Please note that the trail closes daily at 11pm and it is highly recommended to come here during daylight hours.
You will need to traverse through Applewood Trail to locate this cache. Enjoy a glimpse of the creek while walking to this cache. You will need to walk off the main trail to reach this cache location. There will be a small side dirt path that is recommended to use to enter this section of the trail, please go near the reference point listed. Feel free to check out my other caches along the way in this same trail.
Please avoid attempting to find this cache during heavy rain storms since the creek will have a high chance of flooding.
Please be careful while traversing through the forest since it can get quite overgrown naturally.
This is a small sized cache containing a logbook. It is recommended to have a tweezer with you since it can be hard to get the logbook out. Feel free to notify me if the cache seems to be tampered with or missing, I will replace it as soon as possible.
Please make sure the cache is snug and tucked in place when you place it back in its original spot.
Please do not take or destroy the cache :)
This trail is known for having many insects such as mosquitoes during the warmer months.
It is highly recommended to wear longer sleeved articles of clothing or bug spray when entering the forest.
Feel free to help out by voluntarily cleaning up any unwanted trash and debris that often sadly plague this trail :)
