Geocache Description:

This is a good site for getting kids thinking about how home gardeners can change landscapes, and about our relationships with insects.  Little ones will need help reaching the actual cache but hopefully they'll find some good swag in it as well.

When this rural area was developed into a Toronto suburb in the early 1950s, European immigrants were the first to move in.  They planted fruit trees, grapevines, and vegetable gardens that in many cases continue to be nurtured by the Asian and South Asian immigrants who have moved in since.  Just a few meters east of the cache are plum trees, and the surrounding properties host pear, apricot & apple trees as well as multiple grapevines that probably date from those first homeowners.  In warmer months the cache also sits just across from a local's efforts to grow a bean teepee.

You can sense the space and time it might take to grow these foods, but it's harder to see all the insect life that wants to pollinate, eat, or live within it.  Below the cache you might observe the current or abandoned homes of solitary bees or wasps (unlikely to sting) and other insects.  Please don't prod at or expose these homes, but feel free to consider how many different kinds you can see, and how each one has been filled in.

The property owners think this would be a great place for Travel Bugs to take a break before moving on!
