THE MAGGIES

The Magpie Family featured at WP1 was created by Australian artist Emily Floyd, especially commissioned for the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail. The artwork features a six metre tall Magpie at Londrigan Station, along the trail from Bowser to Tarrawingee.
Magpie Family explores the storied worlds of Magpies, alongside themes of ecology and kinship. Magpies are a key indicator of biodiversity, they are intertwined with the different plants, animals, micro-organisms and ecosystems of which they are a part.
The artwork theme of Magpies was developed in consultation with our local community, as many community members shared memories of their experiences with Magpies and their iconic swooping behaviour whilst cycling in the region.
Peak breeding season for Australian Magpies is August through to November, which is when their territorial behaviour begins. During this time, Magpies will protect their nests and chicks and surrounding territory. Male adults use their body language beak clapping, whooshing above and screeching to warn intruders to keep away from their eggs or newly-hatched chicks.
