Geocache Description:

Steamboat Rock is a granite mountain top at 5081 ft above sea level that is NW of Rapid City, SD along Nemo Road.

Drive NW of Rapid City, SD on Nemo road until you come to the Steamboat Rock picnic area along Boxelder Creek on the North side of the road. Park in the picnic area and the cache is across Boxelder Creek and uphill from here. The best trail you will find is a deer trail. You can find a US Forest Service BenchMark Brass Disc # LS4224 at N 44* 09.738' & W 103* 28.217' along the way. There are a few slots in the rock wall that will allow you to get to the top. We went up at N 44* 09.789' W 103* 28.357'. The view is spectacular once you reach the top. The cache is an ammo can. Here is a partial list of contents: A log book, pencil & camera (sign in & take your picture, leave the camera) (Catapult baseball cap, US flag pin & flag facts, Swiss army knife, SD Nat'l Guard mirror & key chain, several small toys, 1 cufflink (the mate is available in another Sly Team cache) Bead bracelet, Turtle Neaclace, Travel Bug "Darth Maul". Here is another way down from the top. At N 44* 09.804' W 103 28.259', you will find a hole in the rock in a small depression. Crawl through the hole, (recommned feet first) and you will come out in a slot where you can climb down. No special climbing gear is required to get to the top or down, however the last section is quite steep.
