La Chiesa di San Gaetano alle Grotte si trova nel cuore pulsante di Catania, nella vivace Piazza Carlo Alberto, famosa per ospitare il mercato storico della città.
L’edificio attuale risale al XVII secolo e presenta una facciata in stile barocco semplice ma elegante. Ciò che la rende davvero speciale è però il suo sotterraneo: la chiesa sorge infatti su una cavità lavica naturale, trasformata nei secoli in cripta e luogo di culto paleocristiano.
Secondo la tradizione, qui i primi cristiani di Catania si riunivano durante le persecuzioni romane e, sempre in questo luogo, sarebbero state custodite le prime reliquie di Sant’Agata, patrona della città. Entrare nella cripta significa compiere un vero e proprio viaggio nel tempo, tra pietra lavica, silenzio e memoria antica.
Oggi la chiesa e la sua cripta rappresentano una testimonianza unica della stratificazione storica di Catania: dalla nascita cristiana della città fino al barocco che ancora caratterizza il centro storico.

The Church of San Gaetano alle Grotte is located in the vibrant heart of Catania, in the lively Piazza Carlo Alberto, famous for hosting the city’s historic market.
The present building dates back to the 17th century and features a simple yet elegant Baroque façade. What makes it truly special, however, lies underground: the church was built over a natural lava cave, which over the centuries was transformed into a crypt and an early Christian place of worship.
According to tradition, the first Christians of Catania gathered here in secret during the Roman persecutions and, in this very place, the first relics of Saint Agatha, the city’s patron saint, were kept. Entering the crypt is like taking a real journey through time, surrounded by lava stone, silence, and ancient memory.
Today, the church and its crypt represent a unique testimony to the historical stratification of Catania: from the city’s Christian origins to the Baroque architecture that still characterizes the historic center.
