The island of Floreana in the Galapagos has one of the most unique post offices in the world. Years ago, whalers who spent years at sea would leave letters in a certain place on the island, and when passing ships stopped there, they would pick up all the letters destined for their home port and deliver them. In some cases, letters would take years to deliver!
The place became known as Post Office Bay, and the tradition continues - every year Galapagos visitors drop off letters and postcards in a barrel there. Other visitors pick up the postcards that are addressed to someone near to where they live, and deliver them.
Several years ago on a visit to Floreana I dropped off a postcard , addressed to myself (featuring the Galapagos Penguin - see image gallery !) and someone picked it up & sent it back to my home within a few months! Apparently when this happens you are destined to return to the Galapagos one day.
October 1st is World Postcard Day - Let’s get together to share postcards, chat about the places we've been and sent postcards from. A bunch of postcards will be on hand to swap. We'll also use postcards as the attendance log.
We'll meet at the Seaside Nature Park in Qualicum Beach on Wednesday October 1st from 9:30-10:30 a.m. By attending this event you will receive a Souvenir - and possibly a Treasure!
