A banshee is a female spirit from Irish and Scottish folklore, known for her mournful wailing or keening that heralds the death of a family member. The term derives from the Irish "bean sidhe", meaning "woman of the fairy mound". Banshees are not malicious but rather messengers of death, often appearing as solitary, haggard old women with white hair, though they can also appear as young women. They are specifically associated with ancient Celtic families and are considered supernatural beings tied to specific lineages, not active agents of death.
