Welcome to Lý Thái Tổ Garden (Vườn hoa Lý Thái Tổ), located in the heart of Hanoi.
This peaceful park is home to a striking bronze statue of Lý Thái Tổ (974–1028), the first emperor of the Lý Dynasty, who moved Vietnam’s capital to Thăng Long (present-day Hanoi).
While the statue honors history, the stone pedestal beneath it tells a geological story. The massive block of dark, polished rock was chosen not only for its beauty but also for its durability and strength. By examining this stone, we can discover its origin, mineral composition, and how it withstands Hanoi’s warm and humid climate.

Công viên yên bình này là nơi đặt bức tượng đồng uy nghiêm của Lý Thái Tổ (974–1028), vị vua đầu tiên của triều Lý, người đã dời đô về Thăng Long (nay là Hà Nội).
Bên cạnh giá trị lịch sử, bệ đá của tượng cũng kể một câu chuyện địa chất. Khối đá lớn màu tối, được mài nhẵn, không chỉ mang vẻ đẹp thẩm mỹ mà còn có độ bền và sức chống chịu cao. Khi quan sát khối đá này, chúng ta có thể tìm hiểu về nguồn gốc, thành phần khoáng vật, cũng như cách nó chống chọi với khí hậu nóng ẩm đặc trưng của Hà Nội.

The pedestal stone is a natural rock, quarried and polished for use in monuments. Stones commonly used for this purpose include granite, basalt, or marble, each with distinct origins and textures:
-
Granite → An igneous rock formed deep underground when magma cools slowly. It usually shows visible grains of quartz, feldspar, and mica.
-
Basalt → An igneous rock formed when lava cools quickly at the Earth’s surface. It is fine-grained, dark gray to black, and very strong.
-
Marble → A metamorphic rock formed when limestone is altered by heat and pressure. It is smooth, often white or dark, sometimes with veins.
When you examine the pedestal, try to compare what you see with these characteristics. Do you notice visible crystals, a fine and uniform surface, or smooth veins? Each clue can help you classify the rock.
Because the stone is outdoors, it is also subject to weathering over time:

Physical weathering → cracks, chips, or a loss of polish.

Chemical weathering → stains, oxidation, or rough patches caused by rain and humidity.

Biological weathering → moss, lichens, or plants growing on the surface.
The use of such durable stone demonstrates both geological strength and cultural purpose: resilient enough to last for centuries in Hanoi’s humid climate, while giving the statue a majestic and enduring base.

Đá làm bệ tượng là đá tự nhiên, được khai thác và đánh bóng để xây dựng các công trình tưởng niệm. Những loại đá thường dùng gồm granit, bazan hoặc cẩm thạch (marble), mỗi loại có nguồn gốc và đặc điểm riêng:

Granit → Là đá magma xâm nhập, hình thành khi dung nham nguội chậm dưới sâu lòng đất. Có thể thấy các hạt tinh thể thạch anh, fenspat và mica.

Bazan → Là đá magma phun trào, hình thành khi dung nham nguội nhanh trên bề mặt. Đá có hạt mịn, màu xám đen, rất chắc.

Cẩm thạch (marble) → Là đá biến chất, hình thành khi đá vôi chịu tác động của nhiệt và áp suất. Bề mặt nhẵn, thường màu trắng hoặc sẫm, đôi khi có vân.
Khi quan sát bệ tượng, hãy so sánh đặc điểm bạn thấy với những mô tả này. Bạn có nhận ra các tinh thể, bề mặt mịn đều, hay những vân rõ nét? Mỗi chi tiết là một gợi ý để phân loại loại đá.
Vì nằm ngoài trời, khối đá cũng chịu tác động của phong hóa theo thời gian:

Phong hóa cơ học → nứt, mẻ, hoặc bề mặt mất độ bóng.

Phong hóa hóa học → ố màu, oxi hóa, bề mặt trở nên nhám do mưa và độ ẩm.

Phong hóa sinh học → rêu, địa y hoặc thực vật bám trên bề mặt đá.
Việc chọn loại đá này thể hiện cả sức bền địa chất lẫn giá trị văn hóa: đủ chắc chắn để tồn tại lâu dài trong khí hậu nóng ẩm của Hà Nội, đồng thời tạo nên bệ đỡ uy nghiêm cho tượng đài.
