This cache was originally placed for the seventh annual Greater Omaha Grave Hop, an event that takes place in the Omaha area. The caches are located in and around cemeteries. Please be respectful and search for the caches between dawn and dusk.
Rose Gorelick was one of eight children born to a rabbi father and a mother who ran a grocery store in the Russian Empire, now the area of Belarus, on December 3rd, 1893. She married Izya (Isadore) Blumkin when she was 20 years old. They immigrated to Seattle, Washington and then were relocated by the American Red Cross to Fort Dodge, Iowa. In 1919 the couple moved to Omaha, Nebraska as the community of Russian and Yiddish speakers were welcoming to them.
They opened a used clothing store. Progressing to a basement furniture store for their Jewish community. In 1933 she opened Nebraska Furniture Mart with an investment made of 500 dollars by her husband. That loan is approximately the value of about $12,000 in 2025. Rose grew the business to become one of the largest indoor furniture stores in America.
This caught the attention of another Omaha native, Warren Buffett. He was so impressed with her and the business that he purchased 80 percent from Rose in 1983 for 60 million on what is said “a handshake deal.” It is said that he never inspected her books and only bought the business because of her and her business sense. Six years later, Rose retired. AND THEN she opened Mrs. B’s s Clearance and Factory outlet across the street. It became profitable 3 years later and then as a course of business Buffett bought that too.
She was involved in her furniture business until her death at 104 years old. Rose died on August 9th. 1998 from cardiac issues and chronic bronchitis.
