Geocache Description:

This cache was originally placed for the seventh annual Greater Omaha Grave Hop, an event that takes place in the Omaha area. The caches are located in and around cemeteries. Please be respectful and search for the caches between dawn and dusk.

In 1846 members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) lead by Brigham Young, established a camp here in Omaha. It was the center for 1000's that fled persecution. They also prepared during this time to cross the Great Plains to go West into Utah. During the time of 1846 and into 1848 many crude cabins were made along the Missouri River. More than 700 cabins were in this area and a great community began.  It was only to be for a short time as most were to leave on the journey in the Spring.  This was just a stop over before moving on. A mill is still located north and east of this cemetery. The temple and cemetery are also reminders of the group of pioneers that stayed.

What was not expected was the great loss of life in this group of settlers. Wide spread illness (malaria and scurvy) and starvation was the cause of death in many that stopped here. The lack of vegatables, consistant meat, and good housing during the winter months made many prone to illness. This remote area did not have medicine to cure these illness.  More than 600 pioneers died that year during the first winter. Many of those settlers are buried here in unmarked graves and also in the surrouding area. Other residents of the area also used this burial area for their dead. This cemetery is called the Pioneer Morman Cemetery.  As an account of history thousands would die on the trek West over many years this was just one group.

A monument called "Tragedy of Winter Quarters" depicts a mother and father burying their child. At the base of this monument is many of the names of those on record who died.

If the gates are open you are welcome to go in and see the monument. You do not need to go into the cemetery to solve this puzzle.
