Geocache Description:

This is the historic Alameda Marina. The site was originally marshland before being developed for shipbuilding, with Barnes and Tibbitts Shipbuilding Co. establishing a shipyard there in the early 20th century. General Engineering & Dry Dock Co. acquired the yard in 1922 and expanded it significantly.

Since 1950, Alameda Marina has served primarily as an industrial boating and marine craft maintenance and storage facility..The yard was a crucial shipbuilding and repair site, repairing ships like Liberty Ships, and was a major Navy supply depot during World War II.

In 1962, Pacific Shops, Inc. (now Pacific Marina) acquired the property and transformed it into the Alameda Marina, a recreational and industrial facility. Notable businesses included Svendsen's Boat Works, a prominent maritime operation.

But this area has been grwoing and changing a lot in the last few years, but the beautiy, and some of the historical WWII era buildings still remain. Including this building, which was built in 1941 as a rigger's loft, it is the largest and most visually striking of any of the industrial buildings surviving from the World War II period on the Alameda Marina property.

The walk along the shore hear is beautiful, and connects with many miles of estuary shoreline you can stroll.

The cache itself is small, containing a log, a pencil, and room for a few trinkets.
