This earthcache is located at Eagles Nest Park in Bancroft.    There are some wonderful and scenic trails so take you time during your visit.   Parking is available at the lower paring lot, with limited handicap parking and washrooms at the upper lot.    There are two locations you will need to visit to gather the information needed to complete the questions.

Please send me your answers using the messenger feature located on the cache page within 4 days of posting your found log.  If there is more than one cacher in your party, include the names in the group.  Only one person needs to send me the group answers.  No spoiler photos please.   Found logs posted without proof you visited the site will be deleted

Questions

  1.  a) At the information sign titled The Valleys and hills, what is the name of the type of granite this hill is composed of?

b) before glaciation, what was the shape of this valley?

At waypoint # 2 look for the information board titled “A water world”.    According to the information, answer the following questions.

  1. During ancient times when the Laurentide ice field melted, what was the deep water in the valley known as? ( two words)
  2.  What is all that is left of massive post-glacial drainages of ancient times?
  3. Look down in the valley to the river below.  The elevation of the river is approximatlhy 323m.  Take an elevation reading from the lookout.  If the water level reached your feet, how many metres deep was the lake when the glacier receded.
  4. From the information on the cache page, what type of volcanic landform created Eagles nest?
  5. Mandatory:  Please post a photo of yourself or a signature item ( GPS, Name on a piece of paper, thumbs up) with the valley in the background with your found log.  (See example photo below).  Each person in a group will need to add a photo with their log.

Example of photo

Eagles Nest in Bancroft was formed 1250-1240 million years ago when granite magma pushed up through the earth’s crust and pooled as this large mass called a batholith.  The bedrock that surrounds this batholith is composed of softer, metamorphosed sedimentary rock which is more easily eroded.

Over the next billion years, erosion and periods of glaciation have eroded the surface of the earth, scraping away 10-15 kilometers of the earth’s crust and eventually exposing this large batholith at Eagles Nest.

Further periods of glaciation helped form this U-shaped valley which you can see from the lookout, with rounded hills in the distance and the fault line that created the vertical cliffs to the north and south along the York River Valley.

Valley formation and terminology

V-shaped valleys are formed over millions of years of long term erosion by natural forces such as running water from rivers and glaciers.   The river cuts through rock and soil to carve out the V-shape, depositing sediment along the shores as the water levels recede.

U-shaped valleys are formed by glacier movement through a pre-existing river valley, which will widen and deepen the valley with the immense power and weight of the advancing glacier.  When the glacier melts and retreats, the U-shaped valley remains behind, often with hanging valleys on its sides.

Corrie / Cirque is an amphitheatre  or horseshoe shaped basin with precipitous walls that is formed through erosion by ice or glaciers.
