Winnipeg and Manitoba have a wealth of Mystery (or Unknown) geocaches. Many people are intimidated by this type of cache so, we're going to buddy up and try and tackle them.
"For every Mystery there is someone somewhere who knows the truth. Perhaps it's you."
The overall event will take place on Saturday, Jan 10th and will run from 10:30AM to 3:00PM and will be broken down into 3 parts:
Part 1: Puzzle Solving 101 10:30AM to 11:30AM
- This is meant for those of you who are unsure of your puzzle solving ability, or even unsure where to start when solving them. I will give a 1 hour (ish) tutorial to help you get past any puzzle anxiety you may have and help you work through some easier puzzle caches. If you are already comfortable in solving puzzles, you can skip this hour.
Lunch Break:
- We're going to have a break mid-day to allow for people to eat a lunch or snack. Please bring you're own food and drink.
Part 2: Puzzle Solving Workshop Noon to 2:30PM
- This is the "meat and potatoes" of the event where everyone comes with their thinking caps on. We'll break up into small groups to work on puzzles from the list of caches requested to be solved. (see below).
- If there are any caches that you want to solve during this workshop, please send me a list through my profile and I will add it to this cache page. Please don't send them on the "day of" the workshop as there is some pre-work on my part.
- Note for latecomers: Please do not come any later than 1:00PM. It's only fair to those who have diligently worked on solving puzzles to reap the benefits. Anyone arriving after 1:00PM can log an "attended", but will not be given puzzle solutions.
- Note for families: Children are welcome to attend, however if they are not actively solving puzzles, and the room becomes crowded, they will be relegated to the library proper and must follow the library's rules for behavior. Also, tables are reserved for active solvers only.
Part 2A: Reset the Meeting Room 2:30PM to 3:00PM
- Before we wrap up for the day, we need to have the tables and chairs and all of our stuff cleaned up, and be out of the room by 3:00PM. I will rely on you to assist with that.
Part 3: Puzzle Hunting! 3:00PM to whenever you want to stop
- What's the fun in solving puzzles if you're not going to go and find them! After we've gotten some solutions under our belts, let's go find them! You can either do this on your own, or join other groups to go on a hunt (or two).
What is being supplied:
- We'll have a private room with chairs, tables, wi-fi, and maybe some flipcharts and white boards.
What to Bring:
- Laptops, tablets, smart phones, GPS devices, beverages, snacks, paper, pens, anything you think you'll need to get you through the session (no alcohol, please!)
- If you want, you can bring lunch or some snackies and beverages.
- A small donation of $2 to $5 to help offset any costs that may be incurred. If you want to donate more that's great. Any money collected above the costs will be used for next year's event. Thank you to the MBGA for allowing us to use their Not for Profit status to get a discounted rate on the room rental.
Where are we going to be?
- We will be at the Louis Riel Library at 1168 Dakota St in South St. Vital. It has excellent (and free) parking and is on a bus route.
What puzzles are we going to solve?
- Please let me know before the event which caches you are interested in investigating. I would like to post them here and give cache owners the opportunity to request that their caches NOT be solved during this event, should they so wish. If you would prefer that your caches not be discussed, please let me know through my profile!
- Feel free to come for only part of the day if you'd like, but please do not show up only for the cache finding portion. You will be politely asked not to come with us to find the solved puzzles.

Send the list of puzzles you're interested in to me via my GC.com profile.
Nominated puzzles should be located in Manitoba. Local caches would be made the priority. If non-Manitoban puzzles are nominated, we will only address these if we solve all of the puzzles above.

Mailbox:
"Hey Dani! What happens if we don't get enough Manitoba puzzles to solve at the event? Can we request ones outside of Manitoba?"
Short Answer: Suuurrreeee.?!.?!
Long Answer: The premise of this event is to solve puzzles. If we don't have enough local ones to solve, we can look outside of the province. Preference will be given to local caches first.
That said, I would like to limit these caches to "just outside the local area". That is, you can recommend puzzles from Saskatchewan, Ontario, North Dakota and Minnesota... as long as they are within 600kms. So: Regina? Cool. Saskatoon? Not so much. Thunder Bay? Cool. Toronto? No way, Jose. Fargo? Cool. Las Vegas? Is there a Las Vegas in Minnesota?!? No? Not likely many of us would be heading to Nevada any time soon. Keep the nominations to puzzles that the group might be likely to find.
Final Note: Please make sure any nominations are made prior to January 5th as there is a lot of work on my part ahead of time.
Thanks!!

When you arrive, sign the log book near the entrance. Make sure when entering your email, it is spelled correctly and is easy to read. Any attendees who worked on any of the puzzle solutions will receive an email of all solved puzzles.
If anyone has any suggestions to make this event even more enjoyable, let me know!
Hope to see you all on Jan 10th!
